William E. Keenan Jr. died peacefully on June 24,2023 at the age of 91. He was born in Brooklyn on February 11, 1932, to the late William and Hattie (Carey) Keenan. He was a devout Catholic who was a parishioner for many years at St. Patrick’s Church in Verplanck, NY. He was married to the love of his life, Patricia McNeary Keenan on April 23, 1955. She predeceased him on March 14, 2013. Together they raised seven children.
William was best known in the community as “Captain Carvel”. He owned and operated the local Carvel franchise in Croton, NY for 22 years. One of his greatest pleasures was treating law enforcement and the religious community to free ice cream. He also loved giving tours to all the local school children accompanied by free ice cream treats.
He was a wonderful father and loving grandfather and great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his children, William Keenan, Mary Foster (William), John Keenan (Laura), Holly Keenan, Clare Carey (Christopher), Elizabeth Rende (Teddy). His grandchildren, Katherine Strang (Nathan), Brian Foster (Lisa), Kevin Foster (Casey), Patrick Keenan (Amanda), Rachel Keenan, Thomas Keenan, Alexander Keenan (Shannon), Peter Keenan (Kasey), Robert Carey (Abby), Gregory Carey. His great-children William Strang, Patricia Strang, Natalie Foster, Stephen Foster, Colton Keenan, Quinn Keenan, Kaiden Keenan. His loving sister, Rosemary Leyden, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sons Denis Keenan, Stephen Keenan and his great-grandson Holden Keenan.
Reposing on Monday, June 26, 2023 at the O’Mara and Carpentieri Funeral Home from 5-9 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 AM on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at St. Patrick’s Church, Verplanck, NY. Interment will follow at the Assumption Cemetery, Cortlandt Manor, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons – give.michaeljfox.org
