James D. Gordineer, resident of Lagrangeville, NY lost his battle with cancer, passing away peacefully at home on February 10, 2021 surrounded by his family and longtime companion Diana Bauersfeld. James was born March 22, 1940 in Peekskill, NY the son of Douglas A. Gordineer and Margaret E. Lent Gordineer. After graduating from Hendrick Hudson High School, Jim joined the U.S. Navy serving on a picket ship out of Newport, RI. from 1957 to 1961. Upon discharge from the Navy, Jim worked at Standard Brands (Fleischman’s), Buchanan, NY. In 1964 Jim, along with Terry Morgan, served as one of the first Red Cross Aides for the Peekskill Ambulance Corps. Jim then began a 17 year career as "Jimmy Sunoco", owner/operator of a Sunoco Gas Station, Highland Avenue (at the Rock Cut), Cortlandt Manor, NY. During the gasoline shortage in the early 1970’s, Jim and Terry operated a rubbish removal business with a 1949 Chevrolet dump truck they christened “Nellie Bell”. Following his Sunoco years, Jim joined the Transportation Department of the Lakeland School District as a Bus Driver where he was affectionately known as "Sonny", retiring in 2013.He enjoyed working on cars, listening to music, fishing, and gardening. He also loved the sport of boxing and was a huge fan of Muhammad Ali. After retiring from Lakeland, Jim pursued his hobby of vegetable gardening and became known as the "Tomato Man on the Corner" in Lagrangeville.Jim is survived by his three daughters, Jo Ann (Sis) Gordineer, Lisa Calabro and Holly Carey (Tom), four step sons Kevin and Scott McGee, Rob and Steve Malon, as well as 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Kathy, nieces Maria, Michele and nephew Matthew. Jim was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Robert.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 AM on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at St. Christopher’s Church, Buchanan, NY., internment to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Verplanck, NY. In lieu of flowers and In honor of Jim’s love of animals, memorial donations may be made in his name to either the ASPCA.org/donate or the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org/donate.
